3.5 过去进行时

定义

1. 表示过去某一时刻正在进行的动作。e.g. I was working at 9 last night.
2. 表示过去某一时段一直在进行的动作。e.g. We were expecting you yesterday.

常与过去进行时连用的时间标志词

过去时间点：
at that time 在那时，then 那时，at six yesterday，at this time yesterday

过去时间段：
the whole morning， all day yesterday， from 7 to 9 last night

when，while等引导的时间状语从句

过去进行时的结构

1. 肯定句：主语+was/were +现在分词+其他 e.g. He was playing football at that time.
2. 否定句：主语+was/were + not +现在分词+其他 e.g. He wasn’t playing football at that time.
3. 一般疑问句：Was/Were+主语+现在分词+其他？e.g. Was he playing football at that time?
   1. 肯定回答：Yes，主语+was/were. e.g. Yes, he was.
   2. 否定回答：No，主语+was/were+not. e.g. No, he wasn’t.
4. 特殊疑问句：
   1. 对主语部分提问：特殊疑问词（who）+ was/were +现在分词+其他？
      e.g. Who was playing football at that time?
   2. 对非主语部分提问：特殊疑问词+一般疑问句语序？
      e.g. What was he doing at that time？

过去进行时的用法

1. 表示在过去某一时刻或某一时段正在进行的动作。e.g. She was listening to music at that time.
2. 与always，forever，constantly，all the time等连用，表示对过去反复发生的动作含有强烈的赞赏、喜好、厌恶等感情色彩。e.g. She was always changing her mind.
3. when引导等表示过去时间的时间状语从句中，从句用一般过去时，其主句常用过去进行时。e.g. I was watching TV when my mother asked me to take a shower.
4. while引导的表示过去时间的时间状语从句中，主句和从句有时均可用过去进行时，表示动作持续的时间大致相同。e.g. We were singing while she was talking on the phone.

when & while的用法辨析

1. 在when引导的表示过去时间的时间状语从句中，从句的谓语动词可以是延续性动词，表示长动作，时态用过去进行时；也可以是非延续性动作，表示短动作，时态用一般过去时。
   e.g. It was raining when I got up
2. 在while引导的表示过去时间的时间状语从句中，从句的谓语动词只能是延续性动词，表示长动作， 时态用过去进行时。
   e.g. He fell asleep while he was reading.

[!note] 注意
若主句和从句的时态都为过去进行时，只能用while引导，不能用when，表示动作同时发生。
e.g. I was writing while she was cooking.

Ben could hear strong winds outside his home in Alabama. Black clouds ——— (make) the sky very dark. With no light outside, it seemed like midnight. The news on TV reported that a heavy rainstorm was in the area.
